Immersion heaters

Immersion heaters are electric heating elements inside the water cylinder with the purpose to heat the water.
An immersion heater has a cable to connect to its own power supply so you can easily turn it on or off.
You can use immersion heaters as a primary water heater or a backup water heater for combi boilers.
People either use in their property a central heating system, hot water, combined central heating boiler, cylinder or an immersion heater as backup to heat the water in their home.
If you have no gas supply in your home, you have the alternative to use immersion heater to have hot water and heat the home.

  • insulated immersion heaters keep water hot long after it switches off
  • time-of-use tariff customers, like Economy 7, can use the timer to set the immersion heater on in off-peak hours as it’s cheaper.
  • very easy to use since it has a switch on the wall socket that can be turned on or off.

Disadvantages when using an immersion heater

  • since an immersion heater is operated on electricity only, it would be more expensive to run.
  • the immersion heater needs to be on for a few hours to reach the necessary hot water temperature to kill bacteria in the water, and that can lead to an expensive electricity bill
  • not having a thermostat, again it can lead to high electricity bill when left on for too long

Overall immersion heaters are quite expensive to run for heat and hot water supply.
