Heating controls
Depending on the user’s input settings, heating controls have the main function to turn the heating on or off automatically to achieve the desired comfort in your property.
Heating controls refer to:
- room thermostat
- boiler programmer
- hot water cylinder thermostat
- thermostatic radiator valve
Heating controls - Room thermostat
A thermostat shares information with the heating system to turn on, if a higher temperature is required, or off if the required temperature is achieved. In order to be efficient, the thermostat should not be covered or blocked (curtains or furniture), placed where is draught (hallway for instance) or near a heat source (radiator or fireplace).
When placed in a hallway, the device can register a lower temperature. Likewise it can read a higher temperature, when placed near a hot fireplace or radiator. In short, placed in the wrong place, a thermostat will not be able to register the right temperature. Therefore the best place is in the living room where people spend their time.
Save money on gas bills with a thermostat
Heating controls - Boiler programmer
You can use a boiler programmer to control the temperature in your home.
The best place for a boiler programmer is the dining room, lounge or hallway.
When the temperature in the property is below the set temperature, the programmer is sending a signal to central heating pump and boiler to release hot water in the radiators. Once the set temperature is reached a second signal is sent to the boiler to stop.
Hot water cylinder thermostat
In case you have a conventional boiler, you definitely have a hot water cylinder. For the cylinder to maintain the right hot water temperature, it needs a thermostat.
A thermostat is usually fitted on the side of the cylinder communicating with the boiler to turn on or off until the set temperature is reached.
In other words its main function is to tell the boiler when to heat up the water in the cylinder. Thus avoiding to heat the water unnecessarily and waste energy.

Thermostatic radiator valve
Thermostatic radiator valve (TRV)/self-regulated valve is fitted to each radiator to control the temperature in that room.
The usual place for a TRV fitting is at the side of the radiator. That gives easy access to set the valve at the desired temperature (the right setting should be at 3 which is about 20°C). However turning a valve ON or OFF to control the temperature is more waste than saving fuel.
A thermostatic radiator valve controls the temperature by changing the flow of hot water to the radiator.
So the valve is built to sense the air temperature surrounding it and should not be covered by any kind of material (curtains) or blocked (furniture). Moreover places like electric fires, TVs, walls, table lamps or similar can stop a valve register the correct temperature.
In conclusion its main function is to control the temperature in each room and save money using only the energy you need.
Wireless / Smart thermostat
A programmer sets the boiler on or off at different times and temperatures for different days of the week. But a wireless thermostat uses signals to communicate with the boiler.
Without a wireless thermostat the temperature in a property can be too high (wasting energy and fuel) or too low. Therefore a smart thermostat is the best option to control the temperature in your property. Moreover using a tablet or smartphone you control your wireless thermostat and temperature even when you are not in.
